The basic function of the Outreach Consultant is to assist students with personal, emotional and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their capacity to see the benefit of completing school, achieving a diploma and becoming a productive citizen.

Typical services include but are not limited to:

1. Working closely with teachers, nurses, administrators and other staff regarding students who are absent or tardy frequently.

2. Making appropriate referrals of students who appear to have exceptional problems which interfere with school attendance or adjustment.

3. Performing casework services with parents to increase understanding, constructive participation in resolving their child’s problem, and their knowledge and use of available resources.

4. Making home visits for the purpose of gathering helpful information on students.

5. Assisting students directly toward adjustment to school.

6. Coordinating Student Study Teams.

7. Addressing referrals from staff for high-risk students.

8. Developing and implementing individual and group counseling for high-risk students.

9. Working with staff to coordinate programs.

10. Acting as a liaison between students and teachers, if necessary.

11. Promoting awareness of substance abuse programs for parents and students.

12. Developing specified criteria to assist students to succeed in school.

13. Coordinating parent education programs.

14. Working closely with families at home and school to seek resources to create a successful educational experience.

15. Assisting in school staff development.

16. Coordinating and monitoring (and sometimes running) programs that motivate students to continue their education.
