HISTORY & PROGRESS of MATH MATTERS

Math Matters (MM) is a staff development project which provides comprehensive, long-term professional development focused on increased mathematical understanding of students and teachers to implement the State Standards. It has been one of the promising long-term professional development efforts sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the California Department of Education (CDE). Math Matters is an instructional model designed to implement the best practices and current research on staff development. Math Matters is an intensive and comprehensive professional development program which supports and promotes the efforts in mathematics to allow our children to compete in our global economy. The project improves the quality of the delivery of K-6 mathematics curriculum in addition to raising the mathematics achievement of all California elementary grade students, especially that of compensatory education and migrant students. Math Matters incorporates a comprehensive program of essential skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving.

In the fourth year evaluation of the project, the outside evaluator stated:

"The great majority of data collected during the four years of MM confirms that this program has been extremely successful in moving toward accomplishing the objectives set forth in the NSF proposal. The leadership and implementation teams have done an outstanding job in coordinating this large-scale project of over 200 schools. MM has shown a high degree of success in developing a long-term, comprehensive program of staff development which provides teachers with opportunities to deepen their mathematical understanding, discuss issues with colleagues, practice effective instructional techniques, participate in peer coaching, and use case studies to reflect on their own practice. The program is greatly respected by administrators and teachers, and has been highly effective for thousands of students, including the target population (bilingual, migrant, and compensatory education students)."
