The purpose of this activity is to provide a series of labs for teachers of 10th through 12th grade science students. Most of the activities are intended for advanced classes in Biology, Physiology and Chemistry. The study of protein and protein structures can be simple or complex depending on the activities used.

This lab provides one to five days of activities for students. Day one requires a small amount of prelab discussion and preparation, since the students model the shape of the protein molecules. Days two, three and any extensions require more lecture time and pre-lab preparation. The protein gel electrophoresis labs are more complex and the teacher needs to demonstrate the use of the equipment and the gels. Prepared protein samples are used, but it is possible to substitute fish, plant or invertebrate protein samples in the lab. An extension, day 5 allows students to compare protein samples from invertebrates before and after exposure to alcohol or any other chemicals. The labs are expensive to use, but 16 samples can be run at one time in one gel box.

The labs also require the use of solutions that can be hazardous if misused. The instuctors and students must follow all safety rules related to the equipment and chemicals. Instuctors need to check the MSDS for all of the chemicals used.
